Long COVID-19 syndrome

If the symptoms last longer than four weeks after a SARS-CoV-2 infection, we speak of long covid syndrome. This includes the post-covid syndrome.
Depending on the studies, about 10-15 percent of COVID patients are affected.  The numbers vary greatly depending on the study.

Post COVID-19 syndrome (PCS)

The symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks after a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Depending on the study, about 6.5 per cent of COVID patients are affected. The numbers vary greatly depending on the study.

The abbreviated term post-COVID syndrome (PCS) in German-speaking countries usually includes both post- and long-covid syndrome.

Our motivation

We want to support Long Covid and Post Covid patients by providing them with information that is important for their recovery and to help them better understand their disease. Our motivation is to help improve their quality of life.

Alleviation of symptoms:

Long Covid can cause a wide range of symptoms that can greatly affect the daily lives of those affected. With appropriate treatment, symptoms such as fatigue, breathing difficulties, muscle weakness, pain and cognitive impairment can be alleviated, leading to an improved quality of life.

Recovery support:

Long Covid can require a lengthy recovery period, during which it is important to support patients and provide them with the information they need. Through targeted treatment and rehabilitation, patients can regain their physical and mental health and improve their functioning.

Avoidance of complications:

Appropriate treatment of Long Covid can help prevent or reduce complications. By targeting symptoms and monitoring health status, potential complications can be detected and treated early.

Information provision:

Long covid is a relatively new condition with a lot of research still being done. It is important to provide patients with information about the disease, its symptoms, progression and available treatment options. This helps patients to better understand their situation, adjust their expectations and make informed decisions about their health.

Psychological support:

Long Covid can also have psychological effects, such as anxiety, depression or frustration due to the prolonged symptoms and uncertainty about the course of the disease. Comprehensive care and support can help patients cope with these psychological burdens.

Treating Long Covid patients and providing them with information is crucial to improve their recovery and quality of life. A multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, therapists and other professionals can work together to provide comprehensive care and support.

Diagnosis by medical expertise

The diagnosis of Long Covid and Post Covid is diagnosed by medical professionals in Germany in a similar way to other diseases. However, there are no specific diagnostic tests or criteria that are exclusive to Long Covid or Post Covid. Instead, the diagnosis is usually based on a comprehensive medical history, physical examinations and the exclusion of other possible causes for the symptoms.

Diagnosis by different specialists

Diagnosis is usually made by specialists such as internists, pulmonologists, cardiologists or neurologists, depending on the presenting symptoms and complaints. Doctors will take a thorough medical history to get information about the history of covid 19 disease and current symptoms. They may also order various tests such as blood tests, lung function tests, ECGs or imaging procedures such as X-rays or MRIs to rule out other possible causes.

Because long covid and post covid are still relatively new conditions, there are no standard diagnostic criteria yet. Symptoms may vary from patient to patient and may also vary over time. The diagnosis is therefore often made on the basis of the typical symptoms and the temporal relationship with a previous covid 19 disease.

To date, no specific test or definitive "proof" of Long Covid exists. In order to make the diagnosis of Long Covid, other possible causes for the symptoms must first be ruled out.

It is important to note that the diagnosis of Long Covid and Post Covid continues to be the subject of research and diagnostic approaches and criteria may evolve as more knowledge is gained about these syndromes.

There is no specific treatment for Long Covid, as the symptoms and their severity can vary from person to person. However, there are several interventions that can help improve symptoms:

Rest and sparing:

It is important to get enough rest and give the body enough time to recover. Overexertion can make the symptoms worse.

Physical activity:

Although rest is important, light physical activity can help improve endurance and strengthen muscles. It is advisable to work with a doctor or physiotherapist to develop a suitable exercise programme.

Breathing exercises:

Breathing problems may occur with Long Covid. Breathing exercises can help improve lung function and strengthen breathing muscles. Singing, vocal and instrumental exercises are very helpful in supporting breathing therapy and are also fun and enjoyable.

A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats can help strengthen the immune system and support recovery.

Stress management:

Stress can make the symptoms of Long Covid worse. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga or breathing exercises can help reduce stress and improve well-being.

Social work:

Long Covid can lead to social isolation. Social workers can help sufferers maintain social contacts as well as build new social networks. They can help with applying for support services such as social assistance or disability housing, and much more.

Coordination of services:

Social workers and care workers can help coordinate medical, therapeutic and rehabilitative services. They can help people access the treatments and supports they need and ensure that different service providers work together effectively.

Support from professionals:

It can be helpful to consult with professionals such as doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists or nutritionists to develop an individualised treatment strategy.

It is important to note that Long Covid recovery takes time and that each case is unique. It is advisable to work with professionals to find the best measures to improve symptoms.
